Abstract
The phytochemical screening of leaves of Myrianthus arboreus using
gas chromatography was investigated. The study revealed that the leaves
contained phytochemicals like alkaloids (297.38mg/100g), glycosides
(20.96mg/100g), flavonoids (19.63mg/100g), phenolics (1185.04mg/100g), tannins
(16.75mg/100g), saponins (52.28mg/100g), triterpenoids/steroids and absence of
cardenolites. Flavonoids present include catechin, resveratrol, genistein,
apigenin, daidzein, butein, luteolin, kaemferol, quercetin, artemetin,
silymarin, rutin and kaemferol was found to have the highest concentration of
9.67mg/100g. Alkaloids present include caffeine, ellipcine, lupanine,
cinchonine, nitidine, crinamidine, echitammidine, captothecin, echitamine,
paclitaxe1, colchicines. Echitamine was found to have the highest concentration
(164.91mg/100g). Glycosides found include arbutin, aalicin, amygdalin, ouabain,
and digitoxin was found to have the highest concentration of 4.86 mg/100g.
Phenols found include Caffeic acid, Chlorogenic acid (465.64 mg/100g was
highest in concentration), Protocatechuic acid, Syringic acid, Ferulic acid,
Sinapinic acid. The highest saponin was sapogenin(28.57mg/100g) others were
diosgenin, tribuloin, yanogenin, saponin. The leaves of Myrianthus arboreus
is rich in bioactive compounds and could serve as herbal therapeutic agent.
